If Shangri-La conjures up images of an earthly paradise isolated from the outside world, happy people, Buddhist chants floating in the air, and mystical monks engrossed in prayers, then Tawang is what you’re most likely thinking about. Located at a height of near about 10,000 ft above sea level, picturesque Tawang is a thinly populated mountainous tract lying on the northwest extremity of Arunachal Pradesh in north east India. It is also the seat of the 400-year-old Tawang monastery, one of the oldest and the largest monasteries in India and the biggest outside of Lhasa.

Ita nagar

Itanagar is the capital of the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Set in the foothills of the Himalayas, the city is home to medieval Ita Fort and the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum, which exhibits textiles and handicrafts. The nearby Gompa, a yellow-roofed Buddhist temple, was consecrated by the Dalai Lama. West of town is Geker Sinying, also known as Ganga Lake, surrounded by forests, orchids and ferns.

TAWANG Monastery

 About 2 Kms from the town is the Tawang Monastery. The Monastery is the second biggest and oldest in Asia and is known as the Tawang Ganden Namgyal Lhatse i.e., the celestial paradise of divine site chosen by the horse was founded by Merag Lodroe Gyamtso in the year 1680-81. The Dalai Lama gave him a painting of goddess Palden Lhamo to be kept in the monastery. The 8 m high glided statue of Lord Buddha dominates the sanctum. The great rotating prayer wheels, priceless thangkas, the drone of monks in prayer, sputtering butter lamps are an evocative vision.


The small town of Bomdila is perched amongst the panoramic settings of the lofty ranges of the eastern Himalayas. It is a remote destination and like few other Indian towns, it has escaped the virtual tourist invasion in recent times. Bomdila is known for its scenic environs along with its Buddhist monasteries and apple orchids. It also attracts the adventure seeker with its numerous trekking trails.

Namdapha Wild Life Sanctuary

The reserve area of Namdapha first came into existence and notice to the international importance during the Second World War due to its rich biodiversity. The latter half of the war was witnessed here with several pilots being crushing at this site as a result of multiple air turbulence over the area. The Assam Rifle conducted its forts scouting in the Vijaynagar area and then in the year 1972, Namdapha was established as a wildlife sanctuary. And the renovation work was still carried on to make the routes in a motorable condition. Further, in 1983, the park was declared a Tiger Reserve and National Park. 

Parshuramkund in the Lohit district - Sage Parshur

Parasuram Kund is situated within the Kamlang Reserve Forest area. This place on the Lohit River carries a strong mythological link with the legend of Parsurama, a Hindu sage. According to the legend, sage Parsurama washed away his sin of matricide in the waters of the Lohit river at Bramhakund. Each year thousands of pilgrims from all over the country congregate on Makar Sankranti day, to wash away their sins. A fair (mela) is held during this period.

Bhismaknagar is the pilgrim place for the IduMishmis. They are the nascent of the tribal groups of Arunachal Pradesh. Bhismaknagar is one the prevalent archeological site and the most hallowed place in Arunachal Pradesh. This place experiences copious visitors every year. An emblem of historical opulence and indicates the extraordinary and classical civilization of Bhismaknagar Arunachal Pradesh.

Malinithan – Granite sculptures

Citation of ancient literature on two different architecture forms like Asmamayji and Ama is available there. All the material that used for constructing various temples of Malinithan along with its pillars and sculptures are of olden type. Thus, it is quite different type of material in comparison to rest of Assam. In Assam, bricks were prevalent in construction industry that time. From the hill areas which is at some distance from Malinithan, tertiary stones were emerged which was used in form of masonry to construct temple and sculpture work. The dowels were used to fix stone blocks and also, it was used to fix iron clamps. Thus, there was no use of mortar in construction of temples.

Tippi Orchid Centre - On way to Bomdila

Sessa Orchid Sanctuary, must visit sanctuary during a trip to Bhalukpong. There are a wide range of attractions for the tourists in form of varieties of orchids, valleys and gorges, rugged terrain and lofty peaks and so on. This sanctuary is also a part of an elephant reserved called as KPAC(Kameng Protected Area Complex). Additionally, tourists can also visit a nearby nursery that holds the demonstrations centering around Cymbidium hybrids for producing cut-flowers.

Akashiganga – Pilgrimage center

The sacred Kund in Akashiganga is the chief attraction of the place. There is also a temple nearby. 100 meters down this path, one can observe a glowing object in the Kund. But as you move closer to it, the object is no more visible. Hordes of pilgrims come to this place to take a holy dip in the Kund so as to wash off their sins.
