Overview

The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is a stunning journey to the source of the holy Ganges River, where spirituality meets raw Himalayan adventure. Starting from the pilgrim town of Gangotri, the trail leads through lush forests, glacial moraines, and the breathtaking Tapovan meadow nestled beneath Mt. Shivling (6,543 m) and Bhagirathi peaks.

Located in the Gangotri National Park, this trek is perfect for experienced trekkers or fit beginners seeking altitude, mythology, and majestic Himalayan landscapes—all rolled into one unforgettable 6-day journey.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Day 1: Dehradun/Haridwar to Gangotri (Drive – 240 km / 8–10 hours)
  • Drive through scenic routes passing Uttarkashi and Harsil along the Bhagirathi River

  • Arrival and check-in at guesthouse/hotel in Gangotri (3,100 meters)

  • Evening visit to Gangotri Temple (optional)

  • Dinner and overnight stay in Gangotri

DAY 2

Day 2: Gangotri to Chirbasa (Trek – 9 km / 5 hours)
Start trek from Gangotri through pine forests and gentle gradients Reach Chirbasa (3,600 meters), named after the abundance of pine trees Camp setup near the Bhagirathi River Overnight stay in tents at Chirbasa
DAY 3

Day 3: Chirbasa to Bhojwasa (Trek – 5 km / 3 hours)
Trek through relatively easy terrain with birch forests and mountain views Reach Bhojwasa (3,800 meters), the last base before Gaumukh Rest and acclimatization day Overnight camping at Bhojwasa
DAY 4

Day 4: Bhojwasa to Gaumukh to Tapovan (Trek – 10 km / 6–7 hours)
Early start towards Gaumukh Glacier (3,900 meters), source of the Ganges Trek through moraine paths and climb steeply to Tapovan (4,400 meters) Stunning views of Mt. Shivling, Bhagirathi I, II, III, and Mt. Meru Set up camp at Tapovan and rest for the day
DAY 5

Day 5: Tapovan to Bhojwasa to Chirbasa (Trek – 14 km / 6 hours)
Wake up early to witness sunrise over Himalayan peaks Descend to Bhojwasa and continue further to Chirbasa Camp overnight at Chirbasa with group dinner
DAY 6

Day 6: Chirbasa to Gangotri (Trek – 9 km) and Drive to Dehradun/Haridwar
Trek down from Chirbasa to Gangotri After lunch at Gangotri, drive back to Dehradun or Haridwar End of trek
